The Dojang - How it came about!

When setting up classes for the traditional Korean martial art of Kuk Sool Won, twenty-five years ago the only place that we could find to rent was a very dingy hall at the Old Malting Leisure Centre; unfortunately it wasn’t too long before we out-grew these facilities.

After a continuous search for larger premises we were eventually left scratching our heads. We realised that certain other facilities, like the Rifle Hall and Halesworth Middle School were already being used by many other sports clubs and came to the conclusion there was just nowhere for us to go.

One evening after a training session a group of dedicated students decided to sit down in the bar of the Old Malting’s to debate this dreary situation. After a lot of discussion someone suddenly suggested that we should build our own training hall. It seemed like a crazy proposition at the time, but non-the-less it was an idea worth looking into.

After pursuing the suggestion a little more, we were thankfully offered a small plot of land by the Halesworth Playing field Association, up at Dairy Hill.  Further research and planning came up with a made-to-measure purpose-built timber framed building, large enough to hold approximately thirty students, with the solitary use of practicing martial arts.

After a lot of blood, sweat and tears, this vision eventually came to fruition and our own purpose built hall was officially opened in November 1988, exactly one year after the idea was initially conceived.  We were also extremely grateful for the support of Waveney District Council, John Cliff Building Supplies, donations from local businesses, as well as many other personal contributions in the way of time, money, and effort.

Today, twenty-five years on, we still have a very active martial art school, with around eighty members, including thirty-five practicing black belts. People often travel many miles to practice in our purpose built dojang. The building does have a certain resonance, something that keeps people coming back for more and more.

What our small building task did display all those years ago was a real act of “community spirit” - everyone working together to achieve a common goal.  The commemorative plaque which hangs on the wall say’s it all.

“This building was once a dream, but was turned into reality by the students of Haleswoth Kuk Sool Won School” ~ November 1988.

New Kuk Sool School

Master Kris French has been associated with the Halesworth & Lowestoft School's for over twenty-five years, which we believe is an achievement in itself. Now he's about to branch-out, opening up his very own Kuk Sool School in Thetford, Norfolk. PKJN Kris will be holding his first class at Thetford Academy Sports Hall on Tuesday September 17th.

Everyone associated with the Halesworth & Lowestoft Kuk Sool School's would like to wish Master Kris every success for the future.

News From The Halesworth Dojang

On Saturday 1st June 2013, nine individual students from the Halesworth Kuk Sool Won School were presented their respective black belt grades at a ceremony held in Kings Lynn, Norfolk. A week earlier the black belt examination had been held for the candidates at the Waterlane Sports Centre. The grading, which consisted in performing all aspects of the martial arts, was conducted in front of a panel of international Master Instructor’s, as well as the Grandmaster and founder of Kuk Sool Won, In Hyuk Suh, 10th Degree Black Belt.

The successful candidates are as follows;

1st Dan Black Belt

JOSHUA MANN, LUCAS COUGHLAN,
BYRON MAYHEW, JOSHUA BUCKLEY,
TOBIAS SCRIVEN,
ELIOT DUCKSBURY,

2nd Dan Black Belt

There was also special acknowledgment and promotion for long-serving student, David Fulcher who has now become one of only a few people from the Halesworth Kuk Sool School to reach the distinguished level of 4th Degree Black Belt.  David was origionaly the second student to join the School, but had to take some time after severely injuring his back at work.

The annual Kuk Sool Won European Championships were once again held at Kings Lynn, Norfolk. Unfortunately this year only three students from the Halesworth School entered the competition this year, however the good news is that they all came away with at least two medals each.

Halesworth Kuk Sool Dojang

We will be celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Halesworth Kuk Sool Dojang in November 2013.

Although there has been much speculation about the re-development of the Dairy Hill site, members of Halesworth Kuk Sool School have been fully reassured that any new plans will incorporate a new or refurbished dojang.

4th Dahn (and above) Black Belt Workshop

WKSA high-grade Black belts are so lucky to have the personal guidance and direction of Master Sung Jin Suh. When you begin to reach the higher stages of martial art training, it's quality not quantity that really counts. This weekend many of our senior instructor's have had the privilege of being personally taught by Suhn Im Kwahng Jahng Nim Suh, which anyone who is involved in Kuk Sool Won understands it is a true honour!

Kick Start Success

Once again we've had another fantastic start to the New Year by implementing our Martial Arts Health & Fitness Programme called KICKSTART

Kickstart has been specifically designed for people of all ages,  combining fitness, health & nutrition. We've provided all our adult students with a complete package for improving the quality of their individual fitness levels.

Special thanks to SBN's Helen & Jon Denny (Lowestoft) & SBN Kevin Clouting (Halesworth) for conducting this year's programme.

Bad Weather Policy

In the event of severe Bad Weather during January / February our Martial Art School will apply the following closure policy. If the local schools are either closed or send children home from school this is a general indication that our Kuk Sool Schools will not be open as well. If you need further clarification before travelling out please tel. 07908 786278 or checkout our Facebook page - Lowestoft & Halesworth Kuk Sool School.
