Children In Need

A sponsored “board‐breaking” session for Children In Need was held in November.

The total amount raised was £1410.

Junior Black Belt Leadership Programme

Three Junior students have successfully completed all the requirements to become recognised as Junior Black Belt leaders at the Lowestoft Kuk Sool School.

1st degree Black Belts; Shay Jordan, Dion Thompson and Cordell Thompson, all completed seven theoretical assignments, as well as over one hundred hours of practical learning experience.

Master Martin Ducker who designed the ‘Leadership programme’, said that all three junior students had shown a considerable amount of commitment and dedication in completing the course and that they should feel very proud and pleased with themselves.

News From The Dojang (Nov.2012)

November has been another busy month for the Halesworth & Lowestoft Kuk Sool Schools with several important events taking place, which included national gradings, competitions and fundraising events.

First of all, congratulations to Wayne Sharpe, and Amii Errington in obtaining their 1^st degree black belts. Also another very noteworthy achievement goes to Instructor Stephen Runnacles, who was successful in gaining his third degree Black Belt.

There was also further success on the mat at this year’s UK Kuk Sool Championships, which were held in Liverpool on November 24^th.

The Halesworth & Lowestoft Kuk Sool team consisted of seven participants; Chris Rogers, Alison Rogers, Emma Williamson, Stuart Buskell, Gemma Buskell, Jean Tingey & Wayne Tingey.

Overall a total of twenty-one medals were collected, including eight gold medals.

Sword Cutting

Kuk Sool sword cutting technique is a skill that requires many years of practice, starting off with a wooden sword and then moving onto the metal bladed weapons. Eventually a high grade practitioner (around 4th degree black belt) will be allowed to use a live blade. Great care and attention is needed when performing 'cutting' and should only be done under the watchful eye of an experienced Master Instructor.

In Kuk Sool all types of cutting techniques are practiced equally in order to make the swordsman’s skill complete. The swordsman places great emphasis on the sound that their blade makes as they slice through the air. A thin, sharp sound indicates that the blade is correctly to deliver maximum power. If the sound is ‘fluttery’ and heavy, the sword practitioner knows the angle is incorrect or the speed is to slow.

The basic cutting techniques of Korean sword practice include: straight down chopping actions; angular cuts, both up and down; horizontal slices; and straight forward or backward pokes. The type of cut employed depends on the swordsman’s position in relation to the target. For example, since the opponent’s neck is a relatively small and high target, to reach it effectively requires an upper angle cut. A straight horizontal cut to a target as high as the neck wouldn’t be as effective.

Blast From The Past

Although tournaments are still an important feature for the Halesworth & Lowestoft Kuk Sool School's they don't happen to be our main point of focus anymore. However, let us not totally forget our history and the success we achieved during the late 90's and early 2000's. The fact is that the Lowestoft KSW School were eight time successive winners of the flag, beating some fairly tough opposition back in those days.

Today, relatively speaking we do have a less competitive attitude toward tournaments then we used to, but it's not to say that our students cannot still enjoy the competitive spirit that the WKSA Championships can bring.

Overall, as its often said - it's not the winning or losing that counts, but the taking part.

Congratulations to PSBN Matthew Ball

Congratulations to PSBN Matthew Ball who last year graduated from the The Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst. Most recently he was promoted to Lieutenant. Matthew say's that he owes much of his success down to his Kuk Sool training starting at Halesworth at the age of 5 years old.

Black Belt Workshops

On Friday 16th March & Saturday 17th March, several Black Belts from the Halesworth & Lowestoft School's had the pleasure of having Master Sung Jin & Master Alex Suh (the Grandmaster's two eldest) teach them here in the UK.

The Friday session, which was held in Norwich was specifically for 4th Degree Black Belts and above. During this session the Senior grades and Master's reviewed all their high-grade hyungs, training alongside Master Sung Jin.

On the Saturday a Black Belt workshop was held at Kings Lynn with over one hundred Black Belt students / instructor's in attendance from all over the UK.

Once again a truly inspirational weekend was enjoyed by all. More to come in June 2012.
